Mona Lisa in Charcoal

Description

My final project for Drawing I. We had to take a famous masterwork and recreate it in one of the techniques we had used in the past semester. I chose to recreate the Mona Lisa using charcoal, using it to recreate the negative space at the bottom of the original painting. I didn't do as well with the background landscaping.

Mind if I give some advice?

I've had to metriculously copy more than a few drawings, including one master sketch I forged so well that my instructor said I could go into business making counterfeits >.>;

Anyway, -grid your drawings-.
Print out whatever you're copying and trace a grid over it, then trace that same grid at the same aspect ratio (rulers for the win) on your peice of drawing paper. Using negative spaces, you can determine where each part of the original peice should be, and erase the grid after. "Cheating"? Not really. Many of the old masters did the same thing, and to be honest a lot more of the learning is done in terms of understanding the shading and linework of the artist than the copying of proportions. ^^;
