Friendship Triumphant in War and Peace by EnigmaticThief Friendship Triumphant in War and Peace by EnigmaticThief
The first of two pieces I created to go up as part of a silent auction fundraiser for next year's Cloudsdale Congress event in the D.C. area. Initially I had the idea to do a piece of Rainbow Dash in her Commander Hurricane get-up, as there isn't that much fan art of that particular look. I think the most I've seen from the Hearths Warming Eve costumes is Rarity's Princess Platinum. Anyway, as this event is named after Congress, I had the idea to do up Commander Hurricane in a similar style to the statue that sits atop the Capitol Building's dome. After getting a few reference photos together, though, I decided on a more direct translation into Ponification, as there were so many neat details in the original piece. Thus we have here what I like to call, "Friendship Triumphant in War and Peace."

My first challenge was finding a starting point where everything would fit on the page; as you can see my scanner's platen wasn't quite big enough to get the top of her feather crest. After that, getting just the right amount of detail in the figure was paramount. I had to overemphasize things like the lines in her mane and tail to help convey how this is a piece of art depicting another piece of art, and one that's meant to be viewed from afar. Once the linework was done, it was surprisingly easy to get a bronze patina color out of my inks, but I had to vary it in order to make the distinction between object a bit more clear to the viewer. Little details like adding the three races' heraldry to the shield were fun to to, and though I'll likely have Latin scholars get on my case for it, my hasty machine translations and dictionary look-ups produced "Affectus Quod Tolero" as a slogan equating to "Love and Tolerate." Enjoy!

I'm sorry!
I'm so so sorry, but...

"AMITE QVOD TOLERITE"
(Weird how they tend to do Latin in Canterlock ;p)

You just needed to use the imperative verb endings.
I couldn't find a verb form of affectvs though so I used amo instead.

I hope you'll excuse the v's though (^ ^)
When I write in Latin I like to use the ancient "u = v" thing.
It's just fun for some reason ;p

In any case though, it's a good picture.
Very creative and I especially like the sword and shield.
I was going to say that the earth pony symbol probably should have been in the middle though, but the pegasus symbol really looks better there.

You got the perfect texture for a statue with those india inks, by the way :)

All in all, good job

Thanks, Lum! Like I said I know jack all about proper Latin, so I'll have to remember to come to you if I need any classy slogans, hehe.
